This past Monday the art students had their share of the limelight.

“I had a few pieces in the show and strangely enough, I got an award for the one I didn’t expect to get an award for,” Darlene Bennett (12) said.

Aside from the surprising judging, the show went relatively well compared to years past.

“The art show was the very best this year because of the personnel that we have in the department and being able to work together as a team, which is the biggest thing,” Bob Beiber said.

Beiber explained how having a show run smoothly opened his and the other art teacher’s minds and allowed them to think of new ideas and come up with new ways to display the work.

“One of the new ideas we have for next year is a board in the entrance way with photos and a biography, so it’s just little things like that which will make it easier for the traffic,” Beiber said.

Although he’s a newbie to the show, Brandon Kurtz, a new member of the art department, had a few things to say as well.

“It went pretty well, and with people involved with creating it, and as a department we all seem to work well,” Brandon Kurtz said.

“I’ve heard stories from previous years and how it was hard because of some tensions within the department, but without those tensions it made go a lot faster and we didn’t have as many problems,” Kurtz said.

As far as the attendance, the show had constant traffic throughout the night.

“We had a great turnout and wonderful response from people who attended,” Kevin Keltner said.

Not only was the turnout great, but the showcases also brought a lot of outside attention.

“When it came to judging the senior showcases, it was tough because the level of quality was very even and the range that the students showed was even as well,” Keltner said.

That said, the surrealist movement encompassed more than I had ever known. From painters to dancers to writers, the surrealists made a large impression on each media they laid hands on. The more mainstream of the media used by the surrealists is art. Almost everyone I have come in contact with knows who Salvador Dali is and can usually name or describe his painting “The Persistence of Memory.” Now that I have been reading the manifesto I have come to realize how large this movement was. How could I have possibly, for so long, overlooked something so large? I live in Elkhart; that’s how.

Tennis seniors gearing up for season

The girl’s tennis team played their first match last night at home against South Bend Adams. Despite the teams loss, senior Erika Truex keeps a positive outlook on the season.

“We are going to go far this year because I feel we have the potential and ability,” Truex said.

Part of the reason the team is expecting to do well is because of the leadership the five returning seniors bring to the forefront. These seniors have three of the top spot six spots on the team; Amy Kline and Andrea Moore as doubles partners, Rachel Bollero and Amy Jackowiak as doubles partners, and Erika Truex as a singles player.

“[The returning seniors] are all five the captains instead of just singling it out.” Kline said.

Normally teams have one to three captain, but for this year’s girls tennis team – things are different.

“[Our coach] knows that all five of us have leadership skills and we know how to whip [the younger] girls into shape,” Kline said.

As expected of all doubles players, Kline has been able to work with her partner Moore exquisitely, as Moore has worked extraordinarily well with Kline.

“This is my second time working with a Kline,” Moore said. “I played one dubbs with Abby Kline in 2005, and now I’m playing with her sister and my friend, Amy.”

Moore has thoroughly enjoyed her time spent on the court with the Kline girls, but she did have time on her own as well.

“I had to play doubles this year because the tendinitis in my shoulder can’t keep up with the amount of court I would have to cover playing by myself,” Moore said.

Although Moore’s injury has caused her pain, she won’t let it ruin her opportunity to play on such a talented team.

“I know [the senior] girls really well and being that close to them lets us have a great on and off court experience,” Moore said.

When your last name is a crime

Ever since I was little I had absolutely no idea where my last name came from – even my grandpa (or papa as I call him) has his doubts. “Maybe it’s Czech or German,” he will say, but personally I don’t really think he knows.

After spending Christmas Break with my grandparents, I came to note the name they would put our reservations under at restaurants – Luciano. It’s Italian, so the pronunciation goes “loo-chi-on-o,” with a long “o” at the end. Mine and my grandparents’ last name is Lutian, and it’s pronounced “loosh-an.” Ever since I noticed the similarity and the way my grandparents sneak it in as our reservation name, I’ve had this ongoing theory that in some way I am related to the Italian Mobster, Lucky Luciano.

After immigrating through Ellis Island in 1907 at the age of ten, Lucky immediately involved himself in crime as LuckyLuciano.net dubbed him a “hoodlem.” He eventually rose to power as he grew older and arguably became one of the most prominent Italian-American mafia in the country.

That said, I hope I’m related to him.

Name Dropping

After a long season of conditioning, the girls track team have been preparing for thier time to shine since November.

“This year is not going to be as strong as last year, but I think it will be fine,” Tracy Swain (12) said.

Tracy predicts that the strongest runners this season for the 800 will herself and Cari McAfoos. She also thinks that the 4×8 team (Sam Riley, Sheila Thomasbi, Cari McAfoos, and herself) is going to be very strong this year.

“This year our coach [Lindsey Yoder] is really emphasizing ‘team’ so we’re all really close,” Swain said.

Although the long distance runners have been toiling away, they’re not the only ones working hard.

“The new coach is making the sprinters work especially hard, and I think Heather Willoughby (12) will do very well,” Swian said.

But after the loss of last year’s seniors, the girls are striving to fill big shoes.

“We lost some of our best throwers, like Jahrea Jackson, so we’re struggling to live up to them,” Shannon Whalen (11) said.

Shannon looks to the other main throwers, Daniella Panetta (11) and Corinda Thrapp (10) to help in contributing to a win.

“There are only four shot putters, so we’re trying to work really hard to compensate the small amount of people we have,” Whalen said.

Even if there may be a lack of girls, there is not a loack of talent, and the girls are expected to do very well this season.

London 2012 logo not so inviting

After discovering David Airey’s blog (www.davidairey.com), I realized the length of a design process and all the work that does into that design. Take the London winter Olympics 2012 design for example; it’s eye catching alright. The fact of the matter is not whether it’s “good” or bad” – because it _is_ bad – but the extensive process from which this logo was created. Do they really need the whole organising committee to approve the design? If so, does the committee even know what looks good? I think we generally underestimate the opinions of the common folk (or the non-designers) and become over confident in the designers who supposedly know “what looks good.” Sure there are certain elements that have to agree with one another, but the non-designers don’t know that. They just know what looks goo to them. It really is safe to trust our instincts?

Searching for design sites

Searching for design site has never been so easy. After going to logodesignlove.com I was able to find other links to sites that had a plethora of forum links and commentators. Another great site is thedesignencyclopedia.org; it’s like a Wikipedia for design, all the knowledge and history of the design of the world comes compacted into one site. There’s a google-like search feature that usually comes up with something great, and even if it isn’t great, I’m sure it’s fantastic compared to any other search engine that anyone has ever tried. Ever. Amen.

V-day

If you don’t have a boyf/girlf you’re automatically screwed – no candy, no flowers for you – which is probably most of CHS, considering half of the student population consists of desperate nerds who have a better chance of scoring a goal against the varsity keeper than a date with someone of the opposite sex. Aside from not having a Valentine, where did that color scheme come from anyways? Despite popular belief, the signature colors of this holiday are not simply red and pink; purple and white have entered the scene with no mercy and these colors can all be seen – together- sported by a Valentine teddy bear on the endless glass shelves at your local card shop. No card, by the way, is in the slightest bit romantic unless the giver of the card personalizes it with a hand written message. Never type your feelings, the internet tubes may get a hold of the document and unleash it to the mass public, and thus another Valentine’s Day is dubbed a dud. Friends don’t let friends participate in trivial holidays.

So many snow days

Snow snow go away, the kids will come to school despite what you say. This is Indiana, not Florida (where they would freak out about a mass amount of snow) and it seems as though CHS students and parents have never seen snow. The more days missed, the more days made up; and that just sounds like a pain in the rear to everyone besides the seniors, who consequently will have to receive a false certificate in place of a diploma as they cat walk across the stage and smile for a picture with the princi-pal. Therefore, go ahead – extend the school year longer. One can be certain that teachers and students alike will enjoy the days of summer sitting in a classroom that smells like grass.

Taste the rainbow

Walking through the hallways, most of the students simply blend into each other forming a large mass of ignorant teenagers, but some stand out above the rest. These students are hair-raisingly superior to other students – they have unnatural colors gracing their follicles. Maybe there is something about going against the grain of the common students’ hair colors, or maybe it is just the satisfaction of beating to one’s own drum. Either way, these students have what it takes to be openly judged, in a good or bad way. Although the attention may be nice, the hue and saturation of the colors (blue, pink, bright red, purple) are not always suitable to the wearer. According to the universal color wheel, mousy-brown and tealish-blue are not across from each other on the color wheel, which means they aren’t complimenting. One doesn’t need to color their hair differently to stand out, but it is a great way to look punky and edgy. Go ahead – dye your hair until it’s an exact mirror of the rainbow, at least it will match your outfit.
